Term: Fall 2026 | Duration: 15 Weeks (Live Interactive) | Level: Beginner to Intermediate
This 15-week foundational course introduces students to core visual art concepts through modern digital workflows. Students will build essential skills in digital brush mechanics, color theory, value grouping, composition, and visual storytelling, culminating in a polished digital art portfolio piece.
By the end of this course, students will:
Master core digital tools, layer management, and digital painting techniques.
Apply color theory, ambient occlusion, and lighting logic to 2D concept art and illustrations.
Produce a complete, high-resolution digital artwork with process documentation suitable for college application portfolios.
Software: Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, or Procreate (Software onboarding and workspace setup provided in Week 1).
Hardware: Drawing Tablet (Wacom, Huion, or iPad with Apple Pencil).
MODULE 1: DIGITAL FOUNDATIONS & VALUE CONTROL (WEEKS 1–3)
Week 1: Digital canvas setup, brush engine mechanics, stroke control, and pressure sensitivity.
Week 2: Value grouping & light theory—understanding hard vs. soft edges and form rendering.
Week 3: Line art quality, thumbnailing, and volumetric blocking.
MODULE 2: COLOR THEORY & LIGHTING LOGIC (WEEKS 4–7)
Week 4: Color harmony, hue saturation, and color temperature in digital painting.
Week 5: Ambient occlusion, diffuse light, and specular highlights.
Week 6: Material texturing—rendering skin, metal, cloth, and glass surfaces.
Week 7: Atmospheric perspective & environmental depth techniques.
MODULE 3: COMPOSITION & VISUAL STORYTELLING (WEEKS 8–11)
Week 8: Focal points, rule of thirds, dynamic framing, and visual hierarchy.
Week 9: Character & environment concept design—from sketch to silhouette.
Week 10: Mood & lighting design—setting dramatic and narrative tone.
Week 11: Mid-Semester Portfolio Audit & 1-on-1 progress review.
MODULE 4: REFINEMENT & PORTFOLIO READY (WEEKS 12–15)
Week 12: High-resolution rendering, edge polishing, and details pass.
Week 13: Color grading, post-processing filters, and photo-bashing techniques.
Week 14: Formatting presentation slides, process breakdowns, and artist statement writing.
Week 15: Final Showcase: Student Digital Art Showcase and peer/instructor critique.
